ואזל רחבעם לשכם ארי לשכם אתו כל ישראל לאמלכא יתיה:
ythyh lamlka yshral kl athw lshkm ary lshkm rkhbem wazl
Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.

והוה כד שמע ירבעם בר נבט והוא עד כען במצרים דערק מן קדם מלכא שלמה ויתב ירבעם במצרים:
bmtsrym yrbem wythb shlmh mlka qdm mn derq bmtsrym ken ed whwa nbT br yrbem shme kd whwh
When Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was yet in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of King Solomon, and Jeroboam lived in Egypt;

ושלחו וקרו ליה ואתא ירבעם וכל קהל ישראל ומלילו עם רחבעם למימר:
lmymr rkhbem em wmlylw yshral qhl wkl yrbem watha lyh wqrw wshlkhw
and they sent and called him), Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came, and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,

אבוך אקשי ית נירנא ואת כען אקיל ית פולחנא דאבוך קשיא ומניריה תקיפא דיהב עלנא ונפלחינך:
wnplkhynk elna dyhb thqypa wmnyryh qshya dabwk pwlkhna yth aqyl ken wath nyrna yth aqshy abwk
“Your father made our yoke difficult. Now therefore make the hard service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, lighter, and we will serve you.”

ואמר להון אזילו עוד תלתא יומין ותובו לותי ואזלו עמא:
ema wazlw lwthy wthwbw ywmyn thltha ewd azylw lhwn wamr
He said to them, “Depart for three days, then come back to me.” So the people departed.

ואתמליך מלכא רחבעם בסביא דהוו משמשין קדם שלמה אבוהי כד הוה קים למימר איכדין אתון מתמלכין לאתבא ית עמא הדין פתגמא:
pthgma hdyn ema yth lathba mthmlkyn athwn aykdyn lmymr qym hwh kd abwhy shlmh qdm mshmshyn dhww bsbya rkhbem mlka wathmlyk
King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, “What counsel do you give me to answer these people?”

ומלילו עמיה למימר אם יומא דין תתעליב לעמא הדין ותפלחינון ותענינון מלין טבן ותמליל עמהון פתגמין תקנין ויהון לך עבדין כל יומיא:
ywmya kl ebdyn lk wyhwn thqnyn pthgmyn emhwn wthmlyl Tbn mlyn wthenynwn wthplkhynwn hdyn lema ththelyb dyn ywma am lmymr emyh wmlylw
They replied, “If you will be a servant to this people today, and will serve them, and answer them with good words, then they will be your servants forever.”

ושבק ית מלכא דסביא די מלכוהי ואתמליך בינקיא דרביאו עמיה דמשמשין קדמוהי:
qdmwhy dmshmshyn emyh drbyaw bynqya wathmlyk mlkwhy dy dsbya mlka yth wshbq
But he abandoned the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him.

ואמר להון מה אתון מתמלכין ונתיב פתגמא ית עמא הדין דמלילו עמי למימר אקיל מן נירא דיהב אבוך עלנא:
elna abwk dyhb nyra mn aqyl lmymr emy dmlylw hdyn ema yth pthgma wnthyb mthmlkyn athwn mh lhwn wamr
He said to them, “What counsel do you give, that we may answer these people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Make the yoke that your father put on us lighter’?”

ומלילו עמיה ינקיא דרביאו עמיה למימר כדין תימר לעמא הדין דמלילו עמך למימר אבוך אתקיף ית נירנא ואת אקיל מננא כדין תימר להון חלשותי תקיפא מעולימותיה דאבא:
daba mewlymwthyh thqypa khlshwthy lhwn thymr kdyn mnna aqyl wath nyrna yth athqyp abwk lmymr emk dmlylw hdyn lema thymr kdyn lmymr emyh drbyaw ynqya emyh wmlylw
The young men who had grown up with him said to him, “Tell these people who spoke to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but make it lighter to us’—tell them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist.

וכען אבא רמא עליכון ניר תקיף ואנא אוסיף על נירכון אבא רדא יתכון בשרביטין ואנא ארדי יתכון במרגנין:
bmrgnyn ythkwn ardy wana bshrbyTyn ythkwn rda aba nyrkwn el awsyp wana thqyp nyr elykwn rma aba wken
Now my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, but I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.’”

ואתא ירבעם וכל עמא לות רחבעם ביומא תליתאה כמא דמליל מלכא למימר תובו לותי ביומא תליתאה:
thlythah bywma lwthy thwbw lmymr mlka dmlyl kma thlythah bywma rkhbem lwth ema wkl yrbem watha
So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king asked, saying, “Come to me again the third day.”

ואתיב מלכא ית עמא פתגם קשי ושבק ית מלכא דסביא די מלכוהי:
mlkwhy dy dsbya mlka yth wshbq qshy pthgm ema yth mlka wathyb
The king answered the people roughly, and abandoned the counsel of the old men which they had given him,

ומליל עמהון כמלכא דינקיא למימר אבא אתקיף ית נירכון ואנא אוסיף על נירכון אבא רדא יתכון בשרביטין ואנא ארדי יתכון במרגנין:
bmrgnyn ythkwn ardy wana bshrbyTyn ythkwn rda aba nyrkwn el awsyp wana nyrkwn yth athqyp aba lmymr dynqya kmlka emhwn wmlyl
and spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.”

ולא קביל מלכא מן עמא ארי הות פלוגתא מן קדם יי בדיל לאקמא ית פתגמא דמליל יי ביד אחיה שילונאה על ירבעם בר נבט:
nbT br yrbem el shylwnah akhyh byd yy dmlyl pthgma yth laqma bdyl yy qdm mn plwgtha hwth ary ema mn mlka qbyl wla
So the king didn’t listen to the people; for it was a thing brought about from Yahweh, that he might establish his word, which Yahweh spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

וחזו כל ישראל ארי לא קביל מלכא מנהון ואתיבו עמא ית מלכא פתגמא למימר לית לנא חולק בדוד ולא אחסנא בבר ישי גבר לקרוך ישראל כען מלוך על אנש ביתך דוד ואזל ישראל לקרוהי:
lqrwhy yshral wazl dwd bythk ansh el mlwk ken yshral lqrwk gbr yshy bbr akhsna wla bdwd khwlq lna lyth lmymr pthgma mlka yth ema wathybw mnhwn mlka qbyl la ary yshral kl wkhzw
When all Israel saw that the king didn’t listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, “What portion have we in David? We don’t have an inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, Israel! Now see to your own house, David.” So Israel departed to their tents.

ובני ישראל דיתבין בקרויא דבית יהודה ומלך עליהון רחבעם:
rkhbem elyhwn wmlk yhwdh dbyth bqrwya dythbyn yshral wbny
But as for the children of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
18
ושלח מלכא רחבעם ית אדורם דממנא על מסקי מסין ורגמו כל ישראל יתיה באבנא ומית ומלכא רחבעם אתקף למסק ברתיכא למפך ירושלם:
yrwshlm lmpk brthyka lmsq athqp rkhbem wmlka wmyth babna ythyh yshral kl wrgmw msyn msqy el dmmna adwrm yth rkhbem mlka wshlkh
Then King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the men subject to forced labor; and all Israel stoned him to death with stones. King Rehoboam hurried to get himself up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.

ומרדו בית ישראל בבית דוד עד יומא הדין:
hdyn ywma ed dwd bbyth yshral byth wmrdw
So Israel rebelled against David’s house to this day.

והוה כד שמעו כל ישראל ארי תב ירבעם ושלחו וקרו יתיה לות כנשתא ואמליכו יתיה על כל ישראל לא הוה בתר בית דוד אלהין שבטא דיהודה בלחודוהי:
blkhwdwhy dyhwdh shbTa alhyn dwd byth bthr hwh la yshral kl el ythyh wamlykw knshtha lwth ythyh wqrw wshlkhw yrbem thb ary yshral kl shmew kd whwh
When all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the congregation, and made him king over all Israel. There was no one who followed David’s house, except for the tribe of Judah only.

ואתא רחבעם לירושלם וכנש ית כל בית יהודה וית שבטא דבית בנימין מאה ותמנן אלפין גבר גבר עבדי קרבא לאגחא קרבא עם בית ישראל לאתבא ית מלכותא לרחבעם בר שלמה:
shlmh br lrkhbem mlkwtha yth lathba yshral byth em qrba lagkha qrba ebdy gbr gbr alpyn wthmnn mah bnymyn dbyth shbTa wyth yhwdh byth kl yth wknsh lyrwshlm rkhbem watha
When Rehoboam had come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand chosen men who were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.

והוה פתגם נבואה מן קדם יי עם שמעיה נביא דיי למימר:
lmymr dyy nbya shmeyh em yy qdm mn nbwah pthgm whwh
But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
23
אמר לרחבעם בר שלמה מלכא דבית יהודה ולכל שבטא דבית יהודה ושבטא בנימן ושאר עמא למימר:
lmymr ema wshar bnymn wshbTa yhwdh dbyth shbTa wlkl yhwdh dbyth mlka shlmh br lrkhbem amr
“Speak to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, saying,

כדנן אמר יי לא תסקון ולא תגיחון קרבא עם אחיכון בני ישראל תובו גבר לביתיה ארי מן קדם מימרי הוה פתגמא הדין וקבילו לפתגמא דיי ותבו למיזל כפתגמא דיי:
dyy kpthgma lmyzl wthbw dyy lpthgma wqbylw hdyn pthgma hwh mymry qdm mn ary lbythyh gbr thwbw yshral bny akhykwn em qrba thgykhwn wla thsqwn la yy amr kdnn
‘Yahweh says, “You shall not go up or fight against your brothers, the children of Israel. Everyone return to his house; for this thing is from me.”’” So they listened to Yahweh’s word, and returned and went their way, according to Yahweh’s word.

ובנא ירבעם ית שכם בטורא דבית אפרים ויתב בה ונפק מתמן ובנא ית פנואל:
pnwal yth wbna mthmn wnpq bh wythb aprym dbyth bTwra shkm yth yrbem wbna
Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and lived in it; and he went out from there and built Penuel.

ואמר ירבעם בלביה כען דלמא תתוב מלכותא לבית דוד:
dwd lbyth mlkwtha ththwb dlma ken blbyh yrbem wamr
Jeroboam said in his heart, “Now the kingdom will return to David’s house.
27
אם יסק עמא הדין למעבד נכסת קודשין בבית מקדשא דיי בירושלם ויתפני לבא דעמא הדין בתר רבונהון בתר רחבעם מלך שבטא דבית יהודא ויקטלנני ויתובון לות רחבעם מלך שבטא דבית יהודה:
yhwdh dbyth shbTa mlk rkhbem lwth wythwbwn wyqTlnny yhwda dbyth shbTa mlk rkhbem bthr rbwnhwn bthr hdyn dema lba wythpny byrwshlm dyy mqdsha bbyth qwdshyn nksth lmebd hdyn ema ysq am
If this people goes up to offer sacrifices in Yahweh’s house at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn again to their lord, even to Rehoboam king of Judah; and they will kill me, and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.”

ואתמליך מלכא ועבד תרי עגלין דדהבא ואמר להון סגיאה לכון ארחא מלמסק לירושלם הא אינון דחלתך ישראל דאסקוך מארעא דמצרים:
dmtsrym marea dasqwk yshral dkhlthk aynwn ha lyrwshlm mlmsq arkha lkwn sgyah lhwn wamr ddhba eglyn thry webd mlka wathmlyk
So the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold; and he said to them, “It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Look and behold your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt!”

ושוי ית חד בבית אל וית חד יהב בדן:
bdn yhb khd wyth al bbyth khd yth wshwy
He set the one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan.
30
והוה פתגמא הדין לחובא ואזלו עמא קדם חד עד דן:
dn ed khd qdm ema wazlw lkhwba hdyn pthgma whwh
This thing became a sin, for the people went even as far as Dan to worship before the one there.
31
ועבד ית בית במתא ועבד כומריא קצת מן עמא דלא הוו מבני לוי:
lwy mbny hww dla ema mn qtsth kwmrya webd bmtha byth yth webd
He made houses of high places, and made priests from among all the people, who were not of the sons of Levi.

ועבד ירבעם חגא בירחא תמינאה בחמשא עסרא יומא לירחא כחגא דשבטא דיהודה ואסיק על אגורא כן עבד בבית אל לדבחא לעגליא די עבד ואקים בבית אל ית כומרי במתא די עבד:
ebd dy bmtha kwmry yth al bbyth waqym ebd dy leglya ldbkha al bbyth ebd kn agwra el wasyq dyhwdh dshbTa kkhga lyrkha ywma esra bkhmsha thmynah byrkha khga yrbem webd
Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like the feast that is in Judah, and he went up to the altar. He did so in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he had made, and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made.

ואסיק על אגורא דעבד בבית אל בחמשא עסרא יומא לירחא תמינאה בירחא דעדא מרעותיה ועבד חגא לבני ישראל וסליק על אגורא לאקטרא:
laqTra agwra el wslyq yshral lbny khga webd mrewthyh deda byrkha thmynah lyrkha ywma esra bkhmsha al bbyth debd agwra el wasyq
He went up to the altar which he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and he ordained a feast for the children of Israel, and went up to the altar to burn incense.
